How to Take Care of Your Temporary Dental Filling

By emergencydentaltopic - 02:49:00

Dental fillings help restore your damaged teeth back to their normal function and avoid further decay. Your dentist will take into consideration several factors when choosing the right kind of filling material for you. Some of these factors are – the extent of repair, where filling is needed in your mouth and the cost associated with it.

Various reasons are there why the dental emergency  may place a temporary dental filling. Perhaps you have just undergone a root canal or waiting for crown or filling to be made for a problematic tooth. Whatever might be the reason, if you had a dental filling, you might be wondering what you can and cannot do till your tooth has been fixed permanently.

If it is temporary filling, it will come out easily than regular filling. How will you be sure if it will stay till your next dental visit? Read on to know about it.

Watch at the time of chewing

Your dentist will tell if you should not chew with the side of your mouth that holds temporary filling. These fillings will usually last for several weeks or more. It is quite easy to forget about your filling and use it to chew during that time. This should not be a major problem if you chew gently on that side of your mouth only and your filling should be fine. Some foods to avoid till the temporary filling is removed are hard and crunchy foods like nuts, chewing gum and chewy toffee.

Brush and floss gently

After getting a temporary filling, it is important to brush the filled tooth in the same way like you brush other teeth. Use soft- bristled toothbrush to brush thoroughly and keep your teeth in good condition. Flossing around your newly filled tooth might seem to be tricky. If the filling reaches the edge of your tooth, make sure you floss properly. Rather than pulling up when you remove floss in between your teeth, try to pull it outside to prevent floss from snagging on temporary filling and then pulling it out.

What you can expect during a filling

  • Local anesthesia –

  • You will be provided with local anesthesia to numb the area around your tooth during filling procedure.
  • Tooth decay removal –

  • After this, the dentist will cut through the enamel with a drill to remove decay and shape the space to make it ready for filling.
  • Etching –

  • Your dentist ill etch the tooth by using an acid gel for a bonded filling before placing the filling.
  • Resin application –

  • There are different kinds of fillings that the dentist will layer on the resin and harden it with bright light for making it strong.
  • Polishing –

Your dentist will polish the tooth after the filling has been placed.
Thus, practicing good dental care habits can help to care for your temporary dental filling so that they may last for a long time till you see your dentist open on weekends for the next time.

  1. All of this information is great! I also got the temporary dental filling but I think that it is not so effective and taking care of it is also difficult, so I am just thinking to go for the permanent one. I would like to consult an experienced Torrance dentist this time. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
